Pasque Flower (For Richard)
In the hills west of the river
Took a walk with Richard
On the side of the road
And over barbed wire
Looking for the pasque flower
Richard and I hiked up and down
To where he thought the flower’d be found
And they were, by the hundreds

The wind was cold but dying
and stubborn snow melted in the sun
I knelt down in the dirt
Richard walked on
To see something so small and tender
So peacefully exist
In a land as vast and hard as this

there on the hillside of that virgin prairie
I let myself hope that winter was gone
and that Richard and I would soon walk through the tall grass
through the fields of green in the summer sun
through the fields of green in the summer sun

He took his hands from his pockets
And held ‘em behind his back
As he stood on the hill, his hair in the wind
Richard looked like a part of the land
Weathered by so many seasons
Battered by so many winds
Bent but not broken
And ready to rise again

And we walked down the hillside
Of that virgin prairie
Surrounded by sky we went on quietly
Towards the edge of the land in the lonely distance
It was a morning well spent
For Richard and me

And the flowers still grow on that virgin prairie
where I let myself hope that winter was gone
