Healing Road 04:07
when I was a child I lived with my suitcase by the door I don't live like that anymore my roots are growing ever since I was young I wanted to know where I came from I wanted to know who I am where I belong I've carried water and I carry my scars but tonight I walk the healing road beneath a sky of stars on the healing road... at my first pow wow I could feel the drum my beating heart within me alive and young I was full of power and something like love I learned to move with rhythm and felt the warmth of the sun I've known trouble and freefalls in the night but I'm coming home on the healing road one step at a time on the healing road... Oh my children let's give thanks beneath the stars the prairie wind is warm tonight and from these hillsides you can see so far I never dreamed such a sight on the healing road...

On The Train 03:20
I could see the boxcars from Cherry street those trains through our town left a mark on me I'd ride my bike to see the locomotives pass I'd wave to engineers as they'd wave by they were on the train, they were ridin' on the train I was watching one day when they ground to a stop "hey son, you want to ride the next couple blocks?" and I smiled as we passed my father's grocery store his jaw dropped as I waved on by though I am grown when the train whistle blows I want to get on my bike and go and stand near the tracks and feel it go past Oh the glory of the Dakota railroad! I want to feel the train I want to hear the train I'll park the car off a gravel road roll the windows down and close my eyes I'll listen for trains and hear meadowlarks along the Milbank line some days the freighters come rumbling through an ocean of prairie grass in my mind I'm with them rolling in the evening breeze on the endless tracks on the train...

I believe we could get along I believe we could make a change do you? I do. I know this is a small town but you can still have big dreams I do. do you? I think I'm coming to some kinda clarity about who I am and what could be it took me a while to find my voice but now it's here, are you listening? I'm putting down my phone to breathe the fresh air I was born to feel the wind in my hair this world is for me it's also for you do you know that? do you know that? the other night at the park we were together nothing between us but the volleyball net oh, gave me ideas about what's possible about what happens next, what happens next

Mary Ann 05:42
You are shifting gears in your black Chevrolet we are cruising the hills on a Sunday afternoon I am riding shotgun, my hand in the breeze that's my favorite memory of you you have your camera and your sketch pad I've got my head up in the clouds it is summer and we're together I can almost get there now but, oh, Mary Ann when I dream my best dreams you are with me on the wide open prairie oh, sister let us go find another gravel road won't you be sure to make haste and meet me and we'll drive your hands grip the wheel as you pull to the side of the road near an old abandoned farm you are sitting on the hood your hair blows in the wind as your pen glides along you sketch out the barn I imagine all the stories of everything that happened here of a wedding in September the birth of a baby all the laughter and tears I've made for you a wreath of flowers for you to wear your upon your head sister, let's be free and roam the hills now and watch the clouds come and go, shadow on the bluestem
6.
I will tell you of the azure sky of the endless prairie air and space how the breeze feels how the grasses and flowers smell and sound as they move in the wind how it feels to be small again in the best way to be yourself and nothing more don't even think about it out here you could even throw your head back and laugh I will tell you about moments spent looking close to the ground the nearest delight ordinary magic and then the next moment your gaze is drawn to the far reaches of vision each hill invites you to climb and see on and on farther each time I will tell you what it's like to share a moment in the sun with your daughter seeing it through her eyes for the first time to watch her walk the trail with her head up shoulders back the energy of joy the peace of being we are together

mi familia esta aqui conmigo pero no fue siempre asi y la vida que hacemos juntos es un regalo bueno para mi (my family is here with me but it wasn’t always that way and the life we make together is a good gift for me) Trabajo todos los días por la tarde vuelvo a casa contigo y la vida que hacemos juntos en nuestra casa es muy feliz (I work every day in the afternoon I come home to you and the life we make together in our house is very happy) in this small town we make a new life mis manos están abiertas para ti (my hands are open to you) hello my neighbor we need not be strangers you bring your life and I’ll share mine la vida junta (the life we make together)

we drive the same highway but our lives travel different roads let us share this stretch together and see where it goes under the same sky Can I walk a mile in you shoes? Can I rest on your front steps? Can you teach me a new song? For the healing of the land Under the same sky There is always something to celebrate And always something to grieve Broken hearts behind every door We are yearning for healing and peace Under the same sky What do we really have in common? Except our human hopes and dreams And the way we miss our loved ones The way tears feel upon our cheeks Under the same sky God bless the ears that listen God bless the hands that heal God bless the voices that our singing God bless the hearts that still feel Under the same sky Come Eagle on the wing so holy Come Cattle on a thousand hills Come horses thunder in the valley Come red tailed hawk and white tailed deer Come children see it well with clear eyes You are not the first and you will not be the last Your treasure is this present moment Between future that you make and the past under the same sky From my bed I hear the church bells ring the Lord’s prayer And down the street I hear the heartbeats of the drum And in their song the singers sing for power and healing And I say Amen, let the future come…. under the same sky
