I could see the boxcars from Cherry street
those trains through our town left a mark on me
I'd ride my bike to see the locomotives pass
I'd wave to engineers as they'd wave by

they were on the train, they were ridin' on the train

I was watching one day when they ground to a stop
"hey son, you want to ride the next couple blocks?"
and I smiled as we passed my father's grocery store
his jaw dropped as I waved on by

though I am grown when the train whistle blows
I want to get on my bike and go
and stand near the tracks and feel it go past
Oh the glory of the Dakota railroad!

I want to feel the train
I want to hear the train

I'll park the car off a gravel road
roll the windows down and close my eyes
I'll listen for trains and hear meadowlarks
along the Milbank line
some days the freighters come rumbling
through an ocean of prairie grass
in my mind I'm with them rolling
in the evening breeze on the endless tracks
